EPISODE105 - Talking 80s Music with Martin Hennessy

With the last episode of the year, we decided to feature a few of the free gifts that have been offered online to fans by your favorite 80s acts this year (Joe Perry's "Run Rudolph Run" and George Michael's "December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas)") as well as REO Speedwagon's "I Believe In Santa Claus" which was given out a year or so ago. Yes, they were all Christmas songs featured two days after the holiday. It just seemed right to close out the year this way.

As it was the last episode of the year, it was also possibly the shortest. Came down with a cold/flu at the end of Christmas day and was worried that I wouldn't make it through the show. For the first time, we also went through a rundown of all the 80s artists that passed on this year. Emotionally tough to do that but I believe we will make that a year-end tradition. Should be feeling better by next week/year. Happy New Year!

EPISODE104 - Talking 80s Music with Martin Hennessy

This week on Talking 80s Music we celebrated the life of Johann (Hans) Holzel during the 10th anniversary of his passing. Better known under the name Falco, he blazed a trail with international hits that fused dance, rock and rap as well as mixed the English and German languages. Expect to hear a retrospective mix, a remix of "Coming Home (Jeanny Part 2)," a wild mix of "Vienna Calling (live)" and "Out Of The Dark." Probably spent a lot more time on Falco than expected. His death in 1998 was one of the first we reported via the 80s Nuts newsletter and we had always liked his work. I do have to say that he will not be forgotten.

Had a few technical difficulties early on but we got through it. Looking forward to next week as we will be taking some of the best free downloads that were made available to fans this year and putting them in our next episode. There are a lot, so we will need to be picky. Otherwise, from all of us at Talking 80s Music and 80s Music Central, we wish you and yours a very merry Christmas, Hanukkah or Winter Solstice.

EPISODE103 - Talking 80s Music with Martin Hennessy

This week we featured music ("Inside Out" and "Like An Angel") from The Mighty Lemon Drops' 2004 live album, Young, Gifted And Black Country, as well as a classic album track, "At Midnight," and retrospective mix. For a 7 year career, they created a distinctive sound and a catalog of great songs. Why haven't you heard more about them? Great question. They did get some airplay on college radio in the U.S. and several videos appeared on MTV's 120 Minutes but they never caught on. If any of the tracks catch your ear, I urge you to check out their videos at YouTube or to pick up the the live album.

We mentioned a possible new project coming up. I don't like giving much away as we've only just started contemplating what it will entail. I can say that just having a chance to work for and with Totally80sOnline.com is an honor. I've always believed in our mission to get the news, that often gets overlooked by bigger media outlets, to 80s music fans. As we've done the show, the newsletter and our Web sites, I find there are many like-minded souls out there. Passion is infectious.

EPISODE102 - Talking 80s Music with Martin Hennessy

This week we featured music ("Isolation," "Dark Age" and "Last Chance") by Italian dark wave act Neon from their recently released collection, Memories: The Best Of Neon 1980-1986. You definitely hear a lot of different influences throughout the songs and it still is shocking that it didn't get more exposure here in the U.S. The release of the collection was so successful that it went to #1 on the Italian Alternative Albums Chart in September. This is album a must listen/must own for fans of new wave.

During the standard news section of the show, we went through a humongous list of Grammy Award nominees. You see, often when you mention '80s music' in mixed company, it sends weird signals to non-80s music fans. They often think of A Flock Of Seagulls, Tiffany, Duran Duran and Young MC... which isn't entirely wrong. For some reason, forgotten are respected artists like The Police, Billy Joel, Rolling Stones, U2, Madonna, AC/DC, Elton John, Garth Brooks... the list goes on and on. So the next time someone says "Bah, humbug! 80s music stinks!", ask them why so many 80s artists were nominated for the Grammy Awards this year. If they don't believe you, just play them the show.

We were also happy to meet a lot of new people in the chat room during the live recording of this episode. You do make this show special. It's a way to know if the audio is coming out alright. It tells me if I missed something. It also supplies us with a few hilarious jibes once in awhile. Gotta love ya. If you can't make it live, I can entirely understand. You need to quit your job. Just kidding. Your comments, downloads, reviews and posts to the MySpace pages of our featured artists speak volumes.
